[Suggestion] BFG Conversion for Impetus Cannon

Open AngelTechnic opened this issue 3 years ago • 12 comments

While playing with the Impetus Cannon I noticed that it had a lot of potential with its conversions. Railgun seems to be the strongest atm since it hits the hardest and has the best range, but it did get me thinking.

An idea for a conversion would be something akin to the BFG-9000 from the Doom series: have the Impetus Cannon charge up a big ball of impetus, then fire it out as essentially a moving rift. It'd lash out at nearby enemies as it travels, until it expires or hits a wall, at which point it explodes. I'd imagine it'd hit very hard considering it'd be the only impetus cannon shot that isn't a hitscan beam.

Whenever I hear that description of the BFG I never think that's the Doom BFG. I'm way too used to the original's functionality. The first game to use that design was Quake.

you and me both. I'm just calling it "the Doom BFG" as that's its most common and modern incarnation, and has been that way since Doom 3.

DPS-wise the unmodified impetus cannon is superior and shreds just about anything. The Railgun does pierce through and has better range though.

isn't there the whole iframes thing if you attack most monsters? though it does rip apart the ender dragon, but that's about it

iframes are specifically bypassed in this behemoth typh- uh I mean impulse cannon mode. There's a side effect though- looting on your main hand won't affect the drops.

not when i attack common mobs like zombies for some reason

What version are you on? This has been in since unofficial versions of 2.0.13 and we are on... 2.1.4 now.

DoomRater avatar Aug 24 '21 23:08 DoomRater

2.1.4. hold on though i'll have to check again...

AngelTechnic avatar Aug 24 '21 23:08 AngelTechnic

I am launching now to double check, because I haven't seen anything in the patch notes saying it was removed. If it was removed, I'll have to go find when and where it was removed. Edit: My base impulse damage is set to 2.0 and it melts whatever I aim it at. The default is 2.5 now (it used to be 4.0 before the iframe change was made) I am not sure Looting isn't affected as I said before though. That'll bear further tests. But the base point is that this is totally a possible thing to do.

Ok yeah it was the same mod as last time causing things to not do what they should. Now i'm curious what actually makes it bypass i-frames EDIT: Just pointing out, yeah, I disabled the offending mod and it fixed the IC and now I can see why it's so damn devastating.

You mentioned a mod that changed how things take damage- what was it?

sorry for the late response, but it was Potion Core again (same mod that caused issues with void shields in one of my earlier issues)
