Consider Recommending Zerotier for Multiworld Setup
In section 6.1 of the Multiworld setup guide, users are recommended to use Hamachi as a VPN solution in the event that they cannot port-forward.
Zerotier is a software project that can perform the exact same role, but has a few characteristics that make it more attractive than LogMeIn's solution:
- The client is open-source and supports basically any OS that matters
- The server is open-source and can be self-hosted
- The IP space used by ZeroTier doesn't stomp on the MOD-reserved address space (25.0.0.0/8) and is configurable
- External servers are used only for discovery; data is transmitted purely peer-to-peer with E2EE
Downsides include:
- It's a bit less plug-n-play than Hamachi (setup is quick, but not necessarily intuitive. I wouldn't say it's any worse than setting up BizHawk, given that we're already directing users to a PowerShell script)
- Clients are very minimal, consisting of a systemd unit and a CLI utility on Linux and a tray icon with no GUI on Windows
It's a good alternative to Hamachi on the whole, and I'd be more than willing to write a section on the Wiki for setting it up. I personally use it as a management network for my homelab; so far it's proven pretty bulletproof. I consider it a more technically superior application, and I'd love to see more people using it.
