Here are some new icons for Flycut

Open t3rminus opened this issue 11 years ago • 15 comments

Echoing some others' requests for a new menu bar icon, and being quite handy with Photoshop, I decided to make my own. Also, while I was at it, I whipped up a new application icon to match, to replace the free/stock icon that's currently being used.

I've made icons for all sizes, including icons for retina displays.

If you like it, please let me know where I can send the complete package (including PSD sources, .icns file, etc.)

If you have any suggestions, questions, or thoughts, please share them.

It's awesome! Please mail it to me: contact[at]generalarcade.com Thanks!

I love the black and white menu bar icon. The current red one is a little glaring!

The links don't work any more.. just wondering if they made it into the build and wondering when there was going to be a release. The last one in the appstore was for Dec 2011.

Pretty sure it's not gonna happen. I can dig up the icons again if you want, but my intention was to basically surrender them to TermiT, and let him do what he wants, including not using them. I've sort-of considered FlyCut to be abandoned at this stage, based on the dearth of activity.

Also, this issue is over a year old, and looking back, the icons didn't even turn out like I wanted. Although admittedly they are better than the included icon, based on the fact that I've been using a custom build with them for over a year...

It was always my pet project, and I didn't have much time to work on it. Only now I had some time to update the app. Unfortunately, I lost those icons :( I remember them being very cool, though.

If flycut is being maintained again, I’d be happy to design some new icons.

I’m sure I could dig up the ones from 2012, as I’m a compulsive data-hoarder, but they’re undoubtedly outdated and would need to be revamped anyway.

Hi @t3rminus :) Yes, we released a new version two days ago. It would be great if you could dig up an old version or design a new one!

As macOS Big Sur is currently in open Beta testing, and Apple changed the way icons are supposed to look again, it's time for another image revamping! (good-bye 'completely flat' style; hello, floating thingies on top of a rounded-corner square background with a subtle gradient) Flycut-Icon-for-macOS-Big-Sur-1024x1024 The above image should not disappear, so long GitHub remains around. It is was generated using Figma using the current Flycut icon and a template specifically designed for macOS Big Sur. Figma is something I've learned today that existed, and which might disappear by, say, 2025 or so, so it's better to keep a 1024x1024 PNG around, in case it disappears... if you wish to tweak it, while Figma exists, you can duplicate it from here and use it on your own projects (note: you'll need working WebGL support on your browser)

Pity that @t3rminus images are not around anymore (I never saw them), because it would be easy to give them the macOS Big Sur look!

Oh... and sure, before I forget, the above image is released into the public domain (CC0).

Interesting timing! I was sorting some old files, and I managed to find the old icons today too. They're not great by today's standards, and I might try and re-do them, but here they are for posterity's sake. The good news is, I can attach these directly to GitHub now, without having to host them externally, so they shouldn't disappear randomly one day.

The original design had an emblem that was trying to be some kind of wing thing. I've attached it here, but I really don't like it anymore.

The original was also done in Photoshop, which I don't have access to anymore (haven't been in school for a long time), but I've mostly re-created it using what was salvageable in Pixelmator.

And the monochromatic menu bar icon, with an @2x retina size (might need a white one for dark mode these days too...)

Oh WOW! What a pity you don't like the one with the emblem/logo, though — it stands out! An F is... well... F, you know? Not the grade you wish to give to Flycut. Also, having a wing-which-vaguely-looks-like-an-F sort of places both concepts together.

Then again, I'm no designer... also, I cannot possibly understand why you say that 'they are not great for today's standards' — they look awesome to my untrained eye.

I hope we can 'persuade' you to 'like' your emblem again and maybe give it a slight twist or two... one thing which I think that could be added would be... having more pages on the clipboard: since the main reason for installing Flycut is to have several clips on the pasteboard, as opposed to a single one. Single page = single clip; many pages (even if just two...) immediately suggest that this tool allows multiple clips at the same time...

Anyway, just my .02 — from someone who knows nothing of contemporary graphics design (and has no talent whatsoever).

Oh... and thanks for the heads-up about Pixelmator... I have been looking for a 'Photoshop replacement' for a long, long time, to see if I can cut a little more in my running expenses... I've heard of Pixelmator before, of course, but that was ages ago, when the 'Pro' version hadn't been released yet. Anyway, I have downloaded the free trial and I'll be playing with it tomorrow... and then I'll also take a look at Affinity Photo, which seems to have the advantage of being able to run Filter Forge directly... but I digress. Anyway, thanks again for all your work on the icons (I hope that they can be integrated into an upcoming version of Flycut!) and the useful tip about Pixelmator :-)

@GwynethLlewelyn Partly because the icon is 512x512px, and not 1024x1024. I'd like to re-do it using a vector editor, so that I can properly generate intermediate sizes, or they can scale with future screen densities, too.

As for what's wrong with the wing emblem? Mostly that the curves are iffy, have no measure of symmetry, and feel rushed and kind of janky. I wasn't as good of a designer 8 years ago!

I'd love to re-do it (and maybe I still will), but I've been absolutely swamped lately. I'd love to also make a Big Sur icon, too!

@TermiT Can use these icons as-is (I can send a pack including 16x16 and @2x variants, as well as inverted menu bar icons). I still have a "Make new icons for Flycut" entry on my to-do list, though, and I'd love to revisit it properly when I have the time.

@GwynethLlewelyn @t3rminus so cool, thanks for the contribution!

Myself, I like the "F" icon. @t3rminus if you can send me a pack, that would be great. I want to try and see how it looks on Big Sur beta

TermiT avatar Jul 29 '20 04:07 TermiT

@TermiT I found some time to re-do the icons, in vector format from the ground-up. They've been sent off by email to contact[at]generalarcade.com

Hi all,

Just wanted to comment that as someone who is using automatic Dark mode, I would like to have a monochromatic icon in the menu bar that changes with Dark or Light mode. I hope you understand what I mean.

I am no good with Photoshop, but I am very good with complaining :) Kidding; if there is any way I could help, please let me know.
