Description

Sound over speakerphone during a video-call is inaudible by default.

I initiate a video-call to my elderly parents (or they to me). The call starts, video is fine, but audio is inaudible from the typical position for a video/selfie call. Unlike the Android Telegram app, no button is shown to switch to speakerphone.

Workaround: initiate audio-call only. Switch to speakerphone. Make sure speakerphone works correctly on both ends. Then add video. Frustrating the attention span on the elderly who then ask why don't I switch to Whatsapp (grrrr!). Frustrating also compared to the experience with the Telegram Android app. Obviously a UI/UX problem.

Expected Behavior

UI: The button to switch audio to speaker/bluetooth/handset/whatever should be visible also during video call. The button would also be helpful if the video call continues to a place where a bluetooth device that was not available before becomes available, e.g. walking into a car; or just pulling headset out of the charging case while continuing the conversation.

UX: When the call is initiated as a video call, audio should be routed either as speakerphone or to a bluetooth device. Certainly not to the phone as if it is held against the ear as in a traditional voice conversation. No-one intends to show their inner ear in a videocall ;-)

Actual Behavior

UI: The button to switch audio to speaker is replaced by the button to flip the camera used, preventing user's access to the essential audio control.

UX: To hear the other side, I have to press the phone on the ear like for a traditional phone call. I can't see what's on the screen and I am pointing the selfie camera to a body part I do not necessarily want to share with my counterpart.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. start a video-call with a contact.
  2. hold the phone at normal video-call distance.
  3. try to hear what they say.

Environment

Device: iPhone

iOS version: 16.7.7

App version: 10.12
