Very bad color matching on android 11

Open Intranox opened this issue 8 months ago • 3 comments

For some time now, on Android 11 where there are no dynamic colors, the app's UI has gotten worse, mostly in the combination of colors. I find it ugly to see purple next to the green of the background, before it was a different shade of green, now it all seems a bit more confusing. I would prefer to have the colors back or better yet a color selector or theme options for those who have a version of Android lower than 12

It is also the case that on a monochrome (e-ink) screen that some of the lighter colours disappear, which is a pain requiring resetting the screen settings for the specific app. (yes I do have the e-Ink theme set in jtxB but I still get some unreadable very light grey text)

Hi @Intranox , hi @rogercreagh , I'll check that again soon. Google seems to change the default color palette for some reason from time to time...

Thank you very much. I thought that this coloring was not intentional, before it was much nicer visually. I have had it like this for a while, the version I am referring to, in which the colors were better, used the old Android UI libraries api. I remember that the progress slider in the activity panel was round rather than a vertical bar, in my opinion this was also nicer, now it is a bit cumbersome. You can see the screenshot. However the most important thing for me is the coloring that I find really ugly to see like this, the rest are subtleties

Hi, if have made a change that should fix the issue. If you still encounter the problem in 2.11.4-beta03 or higher, please let me know

Hi, thank you so much for your work. I have the F-Droid version so I will wait for the update to be available for me too, if there are any problems I will report

Many thanks, I'm glad you're interested in the problem I encountered. I updated to version 2.11.04 but the problem recurs on Android versions at least from 11 onwards (Screenshot below). I recovered another smartphone with Android 9 in which the problem reproduces itself, but at least on this one I downloaded the github version so I can be more responsive to beta versions since I'm not afraid of losing data. The cards, as well as the context menus, are always that pinkish color, they seem to take the default color of the M3 theme and not respond to the custom one. In my little experience I think it is possible that this is due to the adaptive color which, for previous versions of Android 12, does not exist and therefore the default color of M3 is inserted.

Hi @Intranox , I will follow up with your post in a new issue: #1869

Just got 11.04 from fDroid and it is much improved on a monochrome e-ink screen.

I think it is always going to be a compromise between colour and monochrome screens - in order to get contrasting, or even distinguishable, shades of grey on a monochrome screen you will need to use 'colours' which clash horribly (to most eyes) on a colour screen. Conversely colour pairs which look good together in colour may have very close luminance (grey) values.

Does the e-ink setting allow you to have a completely different colour palette?

For text material e-ink screens have massive advantages - battery life of over 7 days of continuous use and ability to read in bright sunlight being just two :-) - ideal for a journal/diary.

Hi @rogercreagh , thank you for the feedback! Yes, the e-ink setting can use a completely different color palette (it just defaults back to M3 default colors if undefined). So if there are any elements that you think need to be improved or need more contrast, just let me know, I'm unemployed right now and I can focus more on these things :-)
