100% agreed, been looking into this in my spare time but haven't had much luck. It worked well before the MkDocs version migration.

I've reported the issue to the creator of mkdocs. He is aware of the issue and will be trying to adress the issue in the future. A Roadmap for the search feature improvements can be found here: https://github.com/squidfunk/mkdocs-material/issues/6307
