Additional information

The switch "Prefer original audio" in NewPipes "Video and Audio" Settings does not change the behaviour.

Just noticed that this bug occurs also the other way around: Videos with german original sound get english voice over when in Background. Example: https://media.ccc.de/v/b3163149-505e-497e-9c75-7cb233b59fcd

Can confirm, it’s really quite annoying :(

Same here.

can confirm this for Version 0.27.4 on Android 15. Videos from 38c3.

is the confirmation enough to remove the "needs triage" badge or is there additional information I could or should provide to help promote this issue?

On https://media.ccc.de/public/events/7f4f44d8-89ea-5a84-8014-090b6ea88f3c I got the French dub in foreground but the German dub in background. What I wanted was the original English.

I'm using English (US) as my preferred content language on NewPipe 0.27.4

I can reproduce this on my Samsung Galaxy A31 (Android 12). I’d like to work on a fix. Any pointers on where to start in the code?

Hi! While investigating this issue, I found that the problem seems to be specific to this video: https://media.ccc.de/v/37c3-12142-breaking_drm_in_polish_trains This video appears to only have a German audio file available. When I tried to directly access the English audio stream by guessing likely URLs like https://cdn.media.ccc.de/congress/2023/mp3-translated/37c3-12142-eng-Breaking_DRM_in_Polish_trains_mp3-2.mp3 (english audio) it returned a 404 Not Found, while the German version exists at https://cdn.media.ccc.de/congress/2023/mp3-translated/37c3-12142-deu-Breaking_DRM_in_Polish_trains_mp3-2.mp3. I also tested other videos that do have both English and German audio files and they worked correctly with English selected when available. So I believe the issue is not with the app’s logic itself, but rather with missing English audio for this specific video. That said, there may still be value in handling this case in a better way (like logging when the preferred language isn't found or showing a fallback notice).

Hi

I found that the problem seems to be specific to this video

After a quick test in newpipe I'm sorry to disagree: This bug is definitely not specific to one video, but rather occurs at (nearly) all Videos from Chaos Communication congresses (but not from smaller events). See e.g. https://media.ccc.de/v/b34a47c0-4f31-5c3e-9384-afab6f7e365f from 38c3.
