"empty trash" doesn't actually work

To reproduce....

How it looks before clicking the link.

After clicking the link, it appears to have worked

However, when returning the to "trash" page, you'll see that nothing has actually been deleted.

I've tried this several times over a number of days, thinking that possibly the "deletion" took a long time, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
