Add alternating background bands as an option

Do not merge until #240 is resolved.

Currently accepting color as a string but considering perhaps adding a styles object too? The rendering is also a bit clumsy, mainly because bands of one axis are overlaying grid lines from another because of stacking context.

Open to suggestions :)
