The author describes the included utilities as follows:

moreutils is a collection of the unix tools that nobody thought to write long ago when unix was young.

It would simplify certain operations. For example, the sponge utility would make it easy to archive or recover data on the appliance that would be generated or processed on the fly by the client, by being too big to write locally, for example, disk images.
