Why is MEM command so slow under EDR kernel?

It takes very long to run on a 8088 with 640k of RAM. So long that I had the feeling the system hang. Should be investigated what causes this slowness.

with DR's MEM.EXE, it runs fast even in 4.77MHz 8088.
