Only show .sprite files for sprite changes in the editor

Open Rusty-Box opened this issue 6 years ago • 9 comments

Currently, when changing a sprite for an object you get all image files and .sprite files of a folder. This gets confusing. I recommand only showing .sprite files when changing a sprite in the editor. Only exception to this are background selection and maybe decal.

Can you not also select also image files as sprite files?

To tobbi's point, yes and I do this. I have recently used this to select an image and not a sprite because my sprite wasn't ready and I wanted a quick image placeholder. (It might have been a decal I was working with, which Rusty Box of Rocks and Grass mhas noted above as an exception.)

I'm watching this one.

NO What if we're too LAZY to make a .sprite file or another one? OR what if we don't WANT/NEED to use the .sprite file? That's not a good thing, and must be avoided! I'd say keep the png files anyways...

@busybody42 I fundamentally disagree with so much you wrote in that one commit. A) If laziness is the issue than I don’t see were this is our problem. This sounds like a you problem instead and B) keeping every single png visible for the sprite selection makes the entire sprite selection an absolute mess and a pain to scroll through. Either we limit the sprite selection for objects to only .sprite files or we have them be separated in a different folder so people can choose pngs at will but when going for a sprite file it is not a mess to find them.

Just make a checkbox whether to show .png as well and default it to false.

Sounds like it could get a bit complicated, but having assignable images that aren't .sprites could be good for beginners.

just make it so the .sprite files appear FIRST, at the TOP of the menu.... THEN the .png files are listed AFTERWARDS! The way I see it, (almost) everybody wins! (EDIT: Zwatotem, your idea is also pretty good... but will it automatically set new sprites to "show = true?" Still a good idea, though...)

Priorities. : -) We don't even have working tool tips for the editor buttons. How is anyone supposed to know what all those meaningless icons do? We could have thousands of minor "would be nice" issues, it seems like it will be endless.

I think, in editor's file selection menu, most prefered files could be displayed with different color (for sprites the *.sprite , for tilemaps the *.strf , for music the *.music ...), and other files, that can be selected could be white, and that can't selected, that can be grey.
