Support custom sauces/LUTs
First of all: thank you for this amazing app, it's a blessing compared to the overcooked stock camera photos (or google cam mod photos, for that matter).
Would it be possible to load custom sauce files? I'm not sure what kind of LUT your sauces are under the hood, but I'd imagine something similar to the LUTs in Darktable or Affinity Photo. So either a 3DLUT/CUBE or HaldClut, I assume? If that's not possible, are you planning to include more official sauces?
Hello, thanks for the kind words, glad you found it useful!
So 'Sauces' is a bit more involved than just a 'Filter' or a LUT. They are hand-crafted (inset + rotation) matrices that have elements that act before the picture formation and after. In other words - 'Sauces' are an integral part of the 'making' of the image.
That being said, people have already made sauces for Saulala (they're currently deactivated, since I moved to a more OCIO-focused setup), but the process is very manual. And I would like to curate the list of 'Sauces', since one of the core principles of Saulala is to be gentle with the images as much as possible.
Eventually, I do plan on creating some sort of a 'barebones' canvas that people could manipulate to end up with a custom 'Sauce', but I really need to focus on refining the pipeline first as there are still some big issues that need solving.
If you have any particular styles / looks / vibes you like, I'm always looking for inspiration for new 'Sauces', so feel free to DM me anywhere on the internet with a set of samples.
Thanks for the elaborate answer! Very interesting to hear about the details of the sauces. Now I understand why you didn't just call them LUTs or something like that.
I use a Fujifilm camera as my main camera, and I've grown accustomed to using their film simulations + custom settings (what we call "recipes") to get certain, mostly analog-like looks directly in-camera. Some of the film simulations can be found here as LUTs: https://blog.sowerby.me/fuji-film-simulation-profiles/ The Classic Chrome look in particular is very well suited for documentary style photography and skin tones, and I'd love to see something similar in Saulala. The closest to this currently would be the Saulala sauce, I'd guess: https://www.reddit.com/r/fujifilm/search/?q=classic+chrome&type=media&sort=top Same with the Acros look, which is a very contrasty black&white: https://www.reddit.com/r/fujifilm/search/?q=acros&type=media&sort=top When it comes to analog film stock, something resembling Kodak Gold or Ultramax would be awesome: https://www.reddit.com/r/analog/search/?q=kodak+gold&type=media&sort=top The greenish shadow tint of underexposed Kodak Gold is already sort of resembled by your Jungle Honey sauce, but I personally find the effect to be too strong.
Just thought I would say that the new Gilded Mint is working wonders on some very warm images I have. The Sualala sauce can be hard to use with an image with super warm tones, I often find they get pushed into yellows that I don't enjoy. Gilded Mint isn't as extreme and keeps more warm and earthy orange tones, at least with the photos I am working on.
The Gilded Mint from 0.9.1.8 personally appealed to me more than the current one, although I like both. I know the blues are supposed to be more muted from the description but in my editing I found that some specific images I had looked so much better with that original sauce from 0.9.1.8.
I guess this is sort of an extension of the OP, but I'd love to be able to use both versions of the sauce if it were possible (at least the ability to swap them out or something). At the moment I am just switching app versions, but missing out on some new features/quality of life updates of course.
Changes in the app usually don't happen just because I feel like it. Since 0.9.1.8, there have been a lot of pipeline improvements (and many sauces were adjusted accordingly), simply because those improvements provide a more robust picture.
Before recent modifications to the pipeline, blues, especially in the sky, especially with Gilded Mint, seemed to collapse and create the same issues we are trying to fix by using Saulala.
I appreciate your clear explanation, apologies for the ignorance on my part!
