Stremio SponsorBlock: Empowering the Community to Skip Unwanted Segments!

Stremio Version
Stremio 5.0

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
I'm frustrated with having to sit through repeated intros, outros, and unwanted segments (including explicit content) in shows and movies. This disrupts the seamless viewing experience I expect from Stremio and forces me to manually skip those segments, which can be time consuming and inconsistent.

Describe the solution you'd like
I propose a built‑in, SponsorBlock‑style feature that allows users to mark segments of content they wish to skip. The key elements of the solution would include:

  • User-Submitted Segments:
Users can mark a segment by specifying a start time, end time, and selecting a tag from a predefined set (e.g., intro, outro, nude, sex, drugs).

  • Community Voting:
Once a segment is submitted, other users can upvote or downvote it. Only segments with a positive net vote count (more upvotes than downvotes) would trigger the skip, ensuring that only widely accepted segments are auto-skipped.

  • Auto-Skip Playback:
During video playback, when the current time enters a marked segment, the player automatically jumps to the segment's end time, providing a smoother viewing experience.

  • Customizability:
Users can enable or disable auto-skipping for specific tags based on their personal viewing preferences.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Alternatives include:

  • Fixed-Time Skips:
Hardcoding skip times for intros/outros. This method lacks flexibility across various types of content.

  • Manual Skip Buttons:
Relying on manual clicks to skip segments, which is less efficient and interrupts the viewing experience.

  • Third‑Party Extensions:
Although some browser extensions provide similar functionality (like SponsorBlock for YouTube), a native solution within Stremio would be more seamless and reduce dependency on external tools.

Additional context
This feature is inspired by SponsorBlock and leverages community input to enhance the overall viewing experience. A native implementation of this system in Stremio would save time for users, help filter out unwanted content, and allow for a more personalized viewing experience. Screenshots or mockups could be provided to illustrate how the submission form and voting interface would be overlaid on the video player. Overall, I believe this addition would significantly improve user satisfaction and set Stremio apart from other media players.
