[Bug]: stremio doesn't exist

Open HomoAmphibious opened this issue 11 months ago • 10 comments

Stremio Platform

LG Native TV App

Describe the bug

Hello. I recently bought an LG tv and i want to download stremio. For bad luck i couldn't find stremio in the webOs app store not from search or scrolling to "s" letter to find it. I talked with LG support team and they told me that it's a developers issue because some of them don't have their apps for hd tvs only for 4k. My model is 32LQ630B6LA and in any country I've tried there was nowhere.... They also told me that developers can change this in the future with a simple update in their app to become suitable for this tv model because is 2022 and a new update in Lg tv webOs to show it up. Please do something for cheaper tvs to add stremio in our library! It is important to me. In my Samsung tv i have it and i love it. Please work on this issue to solve it. My model is 2022 and its sad not to have stremio. It's the best of the bests app. It's sad to have a 2022 model and not to have stremio because my model is HD ready and not 4K. Please make it work. I will be very happy to download it in my other tv. Thanks for your time!

I will start by saying that Stremio does exist, I promise it exists, it is definitely not an AI joke for the internet, and it is not yet another alien conspiracy, it is real, tangible and lovely

now that I have gathered your trust, and we can both agree that Stremio does indeed exist, and is a real thing that people use because it is not imaginary

may I ask if you are located in one of the following regions: Middle East and North Africa or Ukraine?

because, according to the official LG TV app release blog post: https://blog.stremio.com/stremio-is-now-available-on-lg-tvs-for-models-2020/

Stremio is currently not available on LG TV in Middle East and North Africa + Ukraine for “culturally inappropriate content”, we are looking into it but cannot make promises at this time.

If you are in one of these regions, then the reason why you can't use Stremio is because LG TV denied us within these regions until we can guarantee (what i believe to be excessive) censorship over our entire movie / series catalogs (which seems to be required by the governments or religions of these regions?)

here are photos of my 2022 LG TV that is HD ready (and not 4K capable) which is one of the TVs that are used for the official testing of the app

Stremio found in the app store search:

20250107_194001

And the TV model, which has exactly 1 letter difference compared to your TV model:

20250107_194032

jaruba avatar Jan 07 '25 17:01 jaruba

IMHO the 1 letter difference between the models is the region in particular, I believe we both have the same TV, yet mine finds Stremio in the app store, so i believe you are experiencing region blocking, not resolution limitations

Hi again! I didn't tell tha the stremio is fake! I used it in my Samsung tv, my poco phone, my pc and i love it. But in my lg tv i cant find it. I'm from Greece but i tried different country services to find it but nothing.... I m really sad because of that. Can please tell me your country, so to put my tv location in your country and maybe to find it?

the fact that the LG TV reviewers tricked you, bamboozled you and dare I say even bedazzled you into believing that Stremio is imaginary is a hurtful thing to hear

i don't know much about region bypassing, if i were to guess the region setting might not do what you expect it to? maybe the region is based on the LG user profile region? it would be hard to presume, but what I know is that the fact that you have a full hd tv (without 4k support) is not the reason why you can't find it in the app store

jaruba avatar Jan 07 '25 18:01 jaruba

I searce it in the category "entertainment" in the letter "S" but nothing.... Please help!

A video recording would be unnecessary, here are the steps:

  • Press "Apps" button 20250108_113427

  • Press "Magnifying Glass" icon to search 20250108_113433

  • If I just write "s" it already suggests "Stremio" 20250108_113450

  • And the Stremio app is the first result for "Stremio" 20250108_113502

Same in Israel. Is there a way to install it externally?

amitbeck avatar Aug 15 '25 10:08 amitbeck

I have the same issue in Canada. According to Stremio I shouldnt be region locked here. I have tried changing region to US, MEXICO and others, nothing worked. I have an LG C4 with webos so it's a pretty new tv.

badsector47 avatar Aug 23 '25 04:08 badsector47

It is suspended from 2024 LG TV, we are in contact with LG TV support to try to bring it back.

jaruba avatar Aug 23 '25 08:08 jaruba

@amitbeck we will surely get back in the 2024 LG TV app store soon, it is just a matter of fixing a bug they found on that WebOS version, but unfortunately this will not help your case because Israel is part of the MENA region and the app is not available in MENA on LG TV due to extremely strict per country censorship requirements in this region that Stremio is unable to comply with.

That's why I'm asking if there's a way to workaround this, and install apps externally on LG TVs, i.e. via a flash drive or something.

amitbeck avatar Aug 23 '25 10:08 amitbeck

@amitbeck there is no such alternative option

jaruba avatar Aug 23 '25 19:08 jaruba

Hello, I’m on model OLED65C41LA in Bulgaria as region. It says manifactured 03/25, so is it the same issue ? Because I cant find it in the lg store.

Kaloyancho avatar Aug 24 '25 18:08 Kaloyancho

@badsector47 @Kaloyancho LG support insists that it should be visible in their app store for 2024 models outside of MENA region, they are asking for your MAC address and country (you both already provided the country) to get the MAC address try this:

You can find the MAC address by navigating on the remote control: [Settings (gear icon)] → [All Settings] → [Customer Support] → [TV Information] → Wired MAC Address. Please note that menu names may vary depending on the platform.

Same problems for me for 2 days. I am based in Germany. TV Model: LG OLED65C47LA (2024) MAC address: Wired - 00:A1:59:37:0E:77 Wireless - 44:27:45:D4:72:32

It was working fine just a few days ago. On Sunday, a couple of subtitles were failing to load, so I tried to reinstall, but now I can't even find it in the app store.

nirelbaz avatar Sep 02 '25 22:09 nirelbaz

I just had stremio installed and it stopped working (not playing video opening lg media app?). I tried to reinstall it but when I searched it I couldnt find it in the shop. I scrolled trough entertainment section but couldnt find it. I read it sometimes dissapears but I have been constantly checking and it hasnt come back to the search for almost 3 days.

Any update from LG? Can I raise a ticket or something with them? Its quite clearly not in their app store and everyday new people are reporting it in this thread.

badsector47 avatar Sep 03 '25 23:09 badsector47

@jaruba any further info on this? I'm in the uk and have c4, as per other reports - can no longer find the app on the store. You mentioned a bug previously - is there a problem with the app which still needs investigating or is it just an LG problem do you know?

nicpillinger avatar Sep 04 '25 12:09 nicpillinger

I'm in Israel and I had the Stremio app working on my LG TV (webOS, model OLED65B46LA).

At some point it stopped working, I tried reinstalling, but now it disappeared completely from the LG Content Store.

Has anyone else experienced this or knows what to do?

chsh16ou avatar Sep 04 '25 14:09 chsh16ou

I’ve been researching why Stremio doesn’t work on my LG model. Using LG’s official app search service. I found that on my TV 43QNED80T6A.BEUFLJP (Portugal) the app is not available, but on the 43QNED86A6C.BEUFLJP (Portugal) it is listed.

The key hardware differences between these models include:

  • 43QNED80T6A runs on the α5 AI Processor 4K Gen7 (2024),
  • while 43QNED86A6C uses the newer α7 AI Processor 4K Gen8.

Could it be that the app requires the newer processor (Gen8) platform or associated GPU capabilities, which the QNED80 lacks?

Just thinking aloud. Thanks for looking into this!
