Enhancement: Better tonemapper

Rendering

Describe your enhancement suggestion in more detail

Alright, I realize this is a super niche feature. But basically, ever since years and years ago, I've noticed that source engine's highlights just kind of look... bad... when you shine a light that's bright enough in an area. This is directly the result of source engine being an older game engine which's rendering is out of date compared to modern games. What you get are these very exposed areas/highlights that look really ugly to me if a light is too bright. As far as I can tell, this is an issue tied to the tonemapper, but I'm not very technically knowledgeable about graphics.

My suggestion is that it'd be nice to have an alternate way of handling the lighting/tonemapper of the game that mappers can optionally turn on if they prefer a more "modern" look or turn off if they prefer the default source engine look. I understand if this is out of scope, I just figured I'd suggest it just in case, because these highlights have been bothering me for literal years.

I have attached an image to this issue to better show what I mean. The image on the left is how source currently handles lighting and the image on the right is how modern games do it. The image was made in Blender, but I still believe that it accurately represents the issue and a fix should be possible since I believe Desolation did so for their engine.
