Severe degrading of performance when game is kept running for a longer time
My FPS when I start Eco up is around 100-140. During normal gameplay, it steadily goes down to 20-30 FPS after ~2 hours. The only thing that resets it to 140 FPS is restarting the game. There's obviously some kind of cleanup somewhere not happening.
I've spoken to several people on the servers I've played on, and everyone seems to be having this issue. I tried looking for an existing bug report but weirdly, there seems to be none. It seems like everyone just deals with it by restarting the game in regular intervals.
(Obviously I'm not sure about the cause, but I've had this happen in other applications because UI components were hidden instead of removed, and then, instead of re-showing them, they're re-created instead. Maybe something similar is happening here)
"Maybe something similar is happening here" clearly.. as per something multiplying and creating the very well known "memory leak" that I heard about even before buying the game. Currently the only fix is to reboot the game, as per any memory leak. And this is entirely all I know about the subject. However I don't experience that myself, I get a different bug that causes me to restart before that becomes a problem I guess.
One thing I can say is that I am the admin on my own server, I keep things fully updated, I don't mix versions and have never had many players with me all at once. I work in small spurts and stay at base and idle laying down with window both active and inactive all day and night while I'm away and sleeping. So perhaps that's a bug in some statistics accumulating on larger servers and being more fully active in the game. there's your clue!
Hi @Azzurite
Thank you for writing this report. There have been several reports about game performance issues when played for long hours. Though it has been closed in favor of more specific FPS affecting issues. I'll create a new one for this referring to the old one here https://github.com/StrangeLoopGames/EcoIssues/issues/19440.
I have been hitting this as well on a 3700X and RTX2070 Super. FPS will start at around 70-90 FPS, and then after an hour or so will dip to 30-45 FPS. This is with CPU usage being under 50% and GPU usage staying below 65%.
Also getting this same issue on Steam and Windows. Running on a 2060 Super.
Same issue has been happening for me - Steam version in both Windows and Linux. Primarily use + play on Linux, but I have a Windows 11 install as well to boot into and test.
Running MangoHud (performance overlay) on Linux, it looks like this is CPU related; CPU cores aren't at full clocks (while GPU is pegged at 100% regardless as expected) when I first load in, but within an hour or two, all CPU cores are at max clock + load and I start getting severe frame timing issues.
i7-4790K w/ 32GB RAM + RX 580 w/ 8GB VRAM on Gentoo running KDE Plasma on Wayland
Using -force-gfx-direct -force-wayland -force-vulkan
launch flags, but again - this seems to happen under Windows without those flags, too.
If there's any sort of log file I can attach, or even record video of it happening, feel free to let me know and I'll see what I can get!
Player.log Player-prev.log Vivox library error in #18409 and it looks like this caught one of the random crashes I get (reloading the game always works the 2nd time).
I can confirm the same experience for myself and citizens of our community. Common to discuss low FPS and regular client restarts to alleviate issue. Additionally, if the citizen logs out, then back in the problem persists. The citizen must close the game entirely to resolve FPS issue.
Our citizens have substantially varying hardware also, from 15yo pc's to the most modern high end gaming computers, this issue does not discriminate.
Every time I think about eco, I wonder whether this issue has been fixed. It made the game pretty much unplayable for everybody I know, we all very quickly quit, even though we were so so excited about it - this bug left a sour taste in our mouth.
Fixing and optimising other areas of the game to boost fps wont matter if 60 minutes of gameplay turns 100fps to 10fps.
Still occurring as of version 9.6.2. I check game development about every 6 months in hope that this specific issue has been solved. Looks like nothing has changed. I hope devs prioritize this above almost all other performance type issues...
Getting this issue constantly in 9.6.3. Running dedicated server with friends, over half the server is reporting FPS dropping from 100 to 20 after a few minutes of play, restarting the game fixes it temporarily but comes back after very little time.
But this is huge degrade to the game quality...
@Nerodon @117ksk @JoeyMarrey29 Devs are finally undertaking huge steps to work on this issue <3 <3 <3 https://discord.com/channels/254025510651297802/440657230615019521/1042435600537620610 help them playtest!
