Music in R-Type 1 is choppier than on original hardware

The Gb version in R-Type 1 always had crappy and choppy music. But it seems that sound effects cut out the music in gameyob. In level one this is not as much noticable as in level 2. Compared to lameboy, the music and the whole game seems to lag a bit. But honestly, I already prefer gameyob, since other bugs that plagued lameboy are not present in gameyob. Great work!

In Version .41 the sound issues have massively improved. Not quite there yet, but massively improved. So I've playtested a bit more:

  • Boss in level 1 will get the emu to a crawl. - especially when you shoot lasers and and the boss flickers to indivate that it's hit.
  • After completing a level you see a counter counting your bonus score to zero. On original hardware it would have a high pitched screetching. Here it is a bit distorted. - there are other emus that have the same problem, might also be the difference between real speakers and the crappy gameboy speakers.
  • There are issues with layers... your starship would be transparent where it is "white" and you could see the background. On level two monsters would be "behind" the background. --- other emus will do it similar... so I'll check on real hardware next time I'll get to my old stuff in my parent's attic. -The boss of level 2, a giant snake with many segments in gameyob .041 (not in earlier versions) starts with only 2 segments and will have the full amount of segments once it's disappeared from the screen for the first time. --- the "swoosh" when you push the shoot button for longer and load the superbar is missing

here's a longplay of someone else with a different emulator ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvcRJqGd7Wo

  • With the newest build most of the problems are gone: slowdowns in bossbattles are not as severe anymore. the bonus score counter has a better sounding pitch. the boss in level 2 has the right amount of segments. The swoosh sound when loading your super is present..
  • transparency/blending of enemies and your ship with the background is also present in original hardware (I just compared it).
  • Compared to original hardware, the whole game still needs a a few fps more, especially in Level 3 (which consists in essence of one giant boss). There are still a few problems with sound effects cutting off music, but it's gotten way better.
  • All in all: Great work! Thank you. And keep up the good work.
