Upcoming Alarm set in Xdrip every 5 minutes?

It appears that Xdrip sets an upcoming alarm every 5 min or so that is displayed/overrides any real alarm clock times shown on the lock screen/status bar. Is this side effect necessary for Xdrip to work on Marshmallow (CM13) devices? It is a bit annoying not being able to quickly verify that a morning alarm is set correctly without entering the actual clock app but I understand if this is the only way to ensure that bg values get transmitted to the phone.
