Ability to choose different types of labels for planets

Open Atque opened this issue 5 months ago • 8 comments

Sometimes it would be useable to see e.g. the apparent magnitude of a planet on its screen label. This feature exists in many other planetaria. Possibly a checkbox in the SSO tab that says "show magnitude as a label" or something.

Even more values could be useful to users. It could be settable for the user, would be distance (to Earth or heliocentric), light travel time, orbital velocity etc. Perhaps spinbox with these values that could be presented beside the planet name, or instead of it.

Can you show a screenshot/dome-photo of such a planetarium?

Spinbox? What would it show? How would this look?

From the sadly abandoned CyberSky:

Uh, spinbox might be the wrong word, but I mean something like this:

Image Assume it said "draw label as" and the "spinbox" has different values which could be the ones I mentioned. Either that or checkboxes, but showing many at a time would clutter the screen quite badly.

The configuration UI could be something like the XFCE4 panel's clock format configuration (with our own letters for different items):

I am far from convinced this is widely useful. The Infostring provides all data. The next suggestion will be to add various data bits to stars (to help var star observing) and DSO (just because we can?).

The Infostring provides all data

The info string contains a bunch of data for a single object, while this FR asks for showing some bits for all the labeled planets (and maybe later stars etc. indeed).

Yes, I understand this. But do we want all this clutter?

But do we want all this clutter?

Well it's supposed to be optional. In some use cases users may indeed want to see all the planets with particular bits of information next to their names.

Hello @Atque!

Thank you for suggesting this enhancement.
