Improved weights cube options

Open SoFiA-Admin opened this issue 4 years ago • 0 comments

Several improvements in SoFiA’s handling of weights cubes would be desirable:

  • SoFiA’s input weights cube is currently assumed to be 1/σ, while ASKAP weights cubes are provided as 1/σ², which would appear to be the more commonly used definition of the term ‘weights’.
  • As SoFiA produces a noise cube rather than a weights cube as output, it would be useful to have the additional option of loading a noise cube into SoFiA.
  • Given that there is some confusion around the term ‘weights’, it might be desirable to be more explicit in our terminology, e.g. by using ‘inverse variance cube’ instead of ‘weights cube’.

SoFiA 2 already has both options – noise cube and weights (= 1/σ²) cube – implemented, with the user being able to choose one of the two, but not both at the same time.
