Implementation of https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland/-/merge_requests/388.

I haven't really tested this so far, but also made changes to Mesa to use this (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/29140) so I'll do some testing with that.
