Assisted selection of fibula flap donor side
Algorithm:
Above diagram comes from this paper
I would need comments from some surgeon to:
- Assess if the above information is valid
- Help me convert this anatomical description in a coded feature of BoneReconstructionPlanner (maybe provide 4 different pictures that cover all possible cases using BRP)
Another 2 factors to consider
- Anastomosis site left or right- in large mandibular defect eg ramus to ramus
- Orientation of fibula - the anterior aspect of fibula should face the occlusal plane (not always necessary)
@SteveMaisi thanks! If other surgeons give their opinion we may arrive to a consensus in what's best to do and then I can implement it in code
Another surgeon told me:
- anastomosis in ipsilateral neck with anterior pedicle uses ipsilateral fibula
- anastomosis in ipsilateral neck with posterior pedicle uses contralateral fibula
- anastomosis in contralateral neck uses ipsilateral fibula
This is a very useful post. The selection about which fibula should be used and the side of the anastomosis are essential for mandibula reconstruction with fibula. This post perfectly explain the concept
