Transfer the documentation in the README to proper Markdown documentation files.

Fixes #142.

Once this gets merged, the GitHub pages deployment should be taken down, as currently it only shows the README file:

github_deployment_page

And the gh-pages branch be removed.

And the link in the About section of the repository should also be changed to point to the documentation website.
