Question - why wasn't gravatar utilized?

That's a good point actually. I could implement that in the future (With Holder.js as a further fallback if no gravatar).

The main reason this wasn't utilized was purely because I never use it so it never crossed my mind. Most of my forum usage comes in the form in Invision Power Board so you will see a lot of that products features.

And as always, nothing in the project is set in stone. I'm actually in the middle of a major code rewrite, the code base so far is just a complete mess with no consistency.

Right, I see. As it is, npm package gravatar is what I've messed with so far and is what I'd recommend.
