The kind of mojibake shown in the screen capture points to UTF-8 being treated as Latin-1. The specification of ID3 indicates that text fields should be marked with the encoding used in them. Maybe the tool used to tag the files are incorrectly marking the encoding? Should Simple Music ignore the encoding mark and try to autodetect it? While it would work almost every time with Latin alphabet languages, that strategy would certainly be disastrous for eastern language users (Japanes, Chinese, etc.).
I have the same problem, only with Czech instead of French. I believe the file contains correct ID3 v2.3.0 tag (https://id3.org/id3v2.3.0), as it displays correctly in VLC and Rhythmbox.
The song name should be Vyšehrad by Bedřich Smetana, but it displays like this:

Here's interpretation of the frame with song name:
5449 5432==TIT2– frame ID0000 0013== 19 – size of frame minus header0000– flags01– indicates that UCS-2 encoding is used (which really is the only allowed Unicode encoding for this tag version, the only alternative is ISO-8859-1, which can not represent this text)ff fe– BOM56 0079 0061 0165 0068 0072 0061 0064 00– actual data
The information about encoding is actually stored in the file and is correct.
This may be a problem directly with Android: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/37013213 https://vanilla-music.github.io/ can display the names correctly. It however seems to implement a custom parser for the metadata.
