Slideshow not working after upgrade to Android 14

I've been using Simple Gallery for quite some time now, I have a great workflow with it, it's absolutely fantastic and has all the features that I want. Since my phone updated to Android 14, the slideshow appears to no longer work. It looks like it works but it never changes the first image it opens. I've tried including and excluding GIFs and videos, changing to random order, turning on and off the "backwards" setting and the "loop" settings, none of those seemed to work. I also changed the animation settings, still no go.

Is this an issue with the new permissions system in Android 14 for accessing photos? Gallery version shows 6.23.8 Pro.

Well I'll be. I had installed from F-droid and apparently something was funky and not updating the app. I have now installed the latest version, 6.28.1, however, the issue persists.

Also tried to solve by clearing cache/changing general settings but no luck.

I'd like to add a new observation/workaround:

1. make sure "automatically hide system UI at fullscreen media" is checked.
2. make sure that the slideshow button is available among the "visible bottom actions".
3. When opening any media in the gallery app, and the system UI automatically hides, it is possible to press the slideshow button juuust as it fades away. The slideshow settings window pops up while the UI remains gone.

When starting the slideshow under these conditions, the UI remains hidden when running the slideshow and the slideshow function works.

Hope this will help future readers and the person who will fix this bug.

On a Pixel 6 Pro, this workaround does not work for me. Thank you, though.

EDIT: After more testing I can confirm that this workaround does actually work for me, as long as I get to the slideshow button VERY quickly before it disappears. If I don't get to it fast enough and tap to get the bottom buttons visible, then start the slideshow using the button, that's when it doesn't work.
