Deduplicating contacts on import
When importing a .vcf file containing some contacts which you already have, you will end up having them twice.
When 'merge duplicate contacts' is checked in the settings, you won't actually see them in Simple Contacts Pro, but when the contacts are stored connected to a Google account, other apps such as Google Contacts will see the duplicates.
Such a situation could arise for instance when you are merging your contacts from two devices, or when you receive an updated list of of colleagues, which contain both contacts which you already have, and those which you haven't yet.
When the present contact and the contact to be imported differ in some fields, there can be the question of whether the contacts refer to the same person, but there is no such concern when they are identical.
There are also some innocuous differences which could be blindly ignored, such as spaces in phone numbers.
I second this. If an imported and an existing contacts are identical, don't import it.
