Virtual Box with KLayout and Lumerical tools

Open lukasc-ubc opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

Lumerical is not supporting Mac OSX. The alternative is to run a virtual machine, install Linux, then all the design tools.

Here are my notes on how to do this. Others' experiences are welcome to be documented here.

  • Download and install Virtual Box: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
  • Download CentOS 8: http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/8-stream/isos/x86_64/, choose the ISO, then DVD file (several GB)
  • Install new machine - instructions here https://linuxhint.com/install_centos8_virtualbox/
    • start Virtual Box
    • create a new machine
      • Name: CentOS 8 Lumerical KLayout
      • Version: Red Hat (64-bit)
      • Memory: 4096
      • Create Virtual Disk, VDI, Dynamic, Size = 32 GB
    • settings
      • Storage: Controller IDE: Empty: click on CD, then choose disk file (ISO)
    • boot the machine and install the OS

... tried this, but KLayout didn't run with this version...

CentOS 7 works.
