How to completely clear the edge registry? There are two edges in my system.
I uninstalled edge using your program, and then reinstalled it using Microsoft's installer. A bad thing happened. Two edges appeared in the default program. In addition to the two common protocols http/https, two edges also appeared in other associations.
I tried to ask ChatGPT how to deal with this situation. It asked me to delete several registry entries, but it still couldn't associate with the newly installed edge browser.
- Windows Version ?
- How did you end up with 2 versions of Edge installed ? 2.A Do either let you uninstall from Programs and Features?
- Did you do other system/registry mods? *Previous attempts at removing Edge
- What do the icons looks like? (See below)
Thanks for your reply. I have solved this problem. My system is win11 23h2, the icon is the second one, it only exists in the default program of the system settings. There is still an icon on the desktop.
I am leaving some records for future reference.
A few days ago, I tried to delete edge, but I hadn't found your tool at that time. I followed the method on the Internet to manually delete the files and folders of C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft*.*, and also deleted several registry entries. Then I restarted the system and found that it was not deleted completely. Many registry entries were still associated with the original edge, which made it impossible to switch to chrome when calling http/https and other connections. Then I found your deletion tool and ran it, but I am not sure if it works. Then I restarted the system and found that the related associated connection was still on edge, so I downloaded the edge installation package from Microsoft and reinstalled it. At this time, as the title says, two edge browsers appeared in the default program association settings. Later, I used the method given by chatGPT to delete several registry entries, and now I don't remember what I deleted... In the control panel > Programs and Features > Select Edge > Right Click > Repair, and try to repair Edge. After I tried to repair it twice and restarted the system twice, the redundant Edge in the default program association disappeared... I haven't tried to delete it again yet. I plan to keep it in the system for a while to see if there are any other abnormalities.
So I think that EDGE is still too firmly associated with the system. If you can't completely delete its associated registry entries and switch the related associations to a third-party browser, it will be difficult to switch smoothly to Chrome or other browsers. Otherwise, some strange problems will occur...
Sounds like Edge is probably corrupted. Can't say that I've seen the before. Not knowing what was all tampered with, best suggestion would be a fresh install of Windows.
