Mark mode no longer works?

If i do ctrl+space, then ctrl+f, the character is not selected. but if i press the right arrow instead, it is selected.

I'll add on this one instead of opening a separate issue, but when using ctrl keys to move around the mark mode comes on and stay one. After moving around I have to type ctrl+space to turn it off or I'll lose characters.
