Z490 BIOS upgrade after EFI upgrade causes m.2's to crash, USB to fail and graphics glitch
I upgraded from F20 to F21, corrected the BIOS and now whenever I boot the keyboard and mouse won't work as USB support seems to be failing.
I had upgraded the EFI prior to the BIOS update and everything was working correctly.
Does F21 require a different BIOS config?
Thanks
Also here's a weird graphics glitch on boot
.
I can upload screengrabs of the BIOS if you'd like
Any thoughts? I went with a nearly identical spec to @SchmockLord to make sure I'd have a community to help but I've posted twice without a single response after scouring the internet and trying everything I can think of.
I'm really stuck and need help.
Graphics glitch seems to be fixed but my USB seems to be slower than I'm used to. Also all the drives on my Amfeltec SQUID card keep unmounting which would explain why my system kept crashing.
All of this is since upgrading to the latest EFI and then the BIOS to F21.
I'm happy to pay someone for an hour of their time, I just need to get this fixes asap, please.
Hi! Sorry for your frustrations with this…
Have you tried installing BIOS F20? Do you have the same issues with F20 as you do with F21? I’m currently on F20 and have an internal HDD array. I did have to adjust the Scan Policy so it would ignore the HDD array, or else it would fault each time on boot. Otherwise, F20 with the current EFI version is running very well.
I can’t comment on the USB speed, because I don’t have a way to test this appropriately.
Tomorrow I will work on installing F21 and get back to you.
Glad you were able to solve the video output issue. Best of luck with the rest!

How did your F21 install go? I was running F20b since it was released without any issues. You can’t roll back F20 from 21.
The USB issue is pre-OS hence wondering if it’s Bios related. The mouse and keyboard used to work in the bios now I need a wired keyboard and mouse.
I’ve been running a duplicate file scan for 4 days so haven’t been able to restart, it finished today, so I can text the old OS and see if the drives keep disconnecting and I can speed test all of my drives in the new OS vs old, even though the EFI and Bios won’t be changing,
In teens of the EFI
F21 install went great today! Everything appears to be running as normal. I've included some more details to try and help you out though...
I'm using the iMac 20,2 with display out config.plist
I have magic keyboard and magic mouse that both work through bluetooth when in BIOS, even immediately after the update to F21 - without any BIOS setting changes.
I've attached my BIOS settings below for you. I think a few of them are different from the ones posted by Chris
Also, here's my system details MoBo: Z490 Vision D CPU: i7-10700K at 5.0 GHz 1.260 V GPU: RX 580 connected via Thunderbolt to Display RAM: 128 GB of 3600 CL18 Corsair Vengeance Storage: macOS on 1 TB 980evo Plus, Windows on 1 TB 980evo Plus, Time Machine on 2.5" 5 TB Seagate Barracuda, Storage Array on 4 x 3.5" 4 TB Seagate Barracuda; all connections are directly to the MoBo
@addisonduda I also had to set my vcore at 1.26v for it to be stable. But I haven't tried to re-enable enhanced mcp since I did. How is that running for you?
@AlaKru really good - I can't really complain. Haven't tried setting it explicitly to Enabled, but Auto seems to be doing just as good. I do some computational chemistry from this machine and it'll stay locked at 5.00 GHz according to iStats (longest continuous simulation I ran was about 96 hours on 8 threads). Idles at low clocks, but have had no issues ramping up. Stability is also really good. Handling all sorts of tasks while 8 thread simulations are simultaneously running.
@addisonduda very nice! 96 hours 😯
@addisonduda thank you so much for the info and sorry for the delay. Having a new baby means things just take a lot longer!
Everything, except the bluetooth now appears to be working. It's the same MQUPIN fenvi T919 Wireless Card with BCM94360CD as in Chris's spec and has always been working, well, up until this update. It's green inside hackintool.
Weirdly the only only issue is on sleep it appears that the Amfeltec SQUID card disconnects causing all of the m.2 drives to disconnect, or maybe the m.2 just don't like sleeping and the squid card is fine.
Congrats on the little one!
I also have the wireless card Chris recommended and its been just fine. One quirk is I sometimes have to turn my mouse/keyboard off and on again immediately after boot (and only then) for them to be recognized properly. I have the card slotted in the PCIEX1_1. I don't know why it would matter, but maybe try this position (if you haven't already) and see if you have the same issues?
I have sleep disabled on my machine because I find it easier to connect to it remotely when I have to manage job submissions or fetch files. Also... the software I use will allow the computer to auto-sleep and therefore stall the job... I've had it sleepless for nearly two years, and just restart it every month or so. I haven't had any issues with this configuration if that would help solve that issue for you.
All the best!
Thanks a lot, she’s amazing.
The card was working on V20 and 0.7.2 through to 0.7.9 then I upgraded both the bios and firmware, and install a new OS. Stupid really too many variables changed at once.
Basically everything was running perfectly. Now the Bluetooth isn’t even recognised, I’ll try switching the slot tomorrow. I’m not sure which one it’s in right now, but since it was working, I’m sure why it would stop unless a config changed somewhere?
I still have the old OS, so I’ll try booting into that, I keep forgetting because I’d on one of my old drives that keeps disconnecting so it slips my mind to test it.

Sent from my glorious iPhone, however please excuse any apple autocorrect craziness.
I think the issue with upgrading to F21 is, that the ACPI-Delete of the SSDT-7-xh_cmsd4.aml is not working anymore because the ACPI-address changes. Which then results in the SSDT-USB-Ports-Z490-VisionD.aml is not working anymore. Or are you using the kext based USB-mapping? This should not be affected by the BIOS upgrade.

Truthfully I’m just using your EFI exactly as you upload it, with the serial number changes. One of the reasons I went with your exact spec was the EFI support because I’m not great at this and just wanted something that… works!
So whatever method you use is what I’m using.
Gareth

Ok. Then try the following:
- disable the USBMap_iMacPro11.kext and USBMap_iMac202.kext
- enable the SSDT-USB-Ports-Z490-VisionD.aml
- enable the ACPI Delete shown in my previous post.
This should solve your USB issues and I think also your Bluetooth issues. Regarding your screen glitches: I don’t really know how to solve this. Have you tried hooking your monitors like this to a real mac? It is a very special combination of resolution and orientation of 3 screens.
After (!) trying the steps above you could try to remove agdpmod=pikera in the bootlegs. But I think this might lead to the monitors staying black after boot.
How are your monitors connected and which config are you using?
@garethsebshaw any updates?
Hi @SchmockLord. so sorry for the delay. I've hardly been using my machine due to being a stay at home dad.
The changes worked. I've upgraded to the latest 0.8.1 EFI and don't seem to have any those issues. However, only 3 of the 6 SATA ports are working.
1,2,3 0,4,5 are none functional. I've tried different cables and different drives. I know they were working as I had 4 x 6tb drives in there.
Any thoughts?
I'm also running 2 x m.2 in the top 2 slots.
Cheers for everything you do for the community. Gareth
So reading the comments on another thread, I think the issue is that I added a 2nd m.2 but tested with the drives in the wrong combination of slots after installing.
As such I'm going to retest port 6 again, which is the only one I haven't retested under this config.
From what I've read I can only have a total of 6 drives between the 3 x m.2 slots and 6 x SATA ports?

Hi Gareth,
I'm running the same setup and I also have the same issue with non functional 0,4,5 sata ports. Were you able to fix it?
Cheers, Michel
