This is expected. toipe calculates WPM as described here (see "Net WPM").

In your case:

Correctly typed chars: 40 Uncorrected mistakes: 8 Time: 9s WPM: ((40 / 5) - 8)/(9/60) = 0.0

  • WPM is generally more useful when you have a substantial amount of text (more than 10 words) or when it's done over a longer period (more than 10s)
  • This type of WPM calculation encourages correcting mistakes instead of leaving them in.
