@prescod , this is my first time forking a repository and submitting a PR. Please let me know if this is appropriate/welcome.

I added a few sentences to the Index file based on my experience and generous feedback from another OSC contributor (on a different project). I think this will help beginners get started. If some terminology is off, I welcome suggestions.
