As far as I know the short version only works with additional geographic information, which cannot be easily provided. The first few characters define a certain specific area, which would be extreme effort to encode. I am not willing to do that, even when you think of translations a few thousand county and city names.

Hm, it's not clear to me, why GPS can help here. If you want to calc a value 500km away, your own GPS means nothing.
