Lost items when tool breaks

I was using a couple gold swords, and each time the sword ran out of durability, the stack of items highlighted in my toolbar got deleted. Version 1.8.5.

same thing in 1.9.1. When you hit something and the axe/sword in your toolslots break, the Item in your mainhand is deleted. It only happens when attacking something. If a tool breaks while mining nothing is deleted
