Problem Extracting Rosetta 3.14 Ubuntu Binary Archive (tar.bz2 not working)
Dear RosettaCommons Team,
I am an academic user and recently downloaded the Rosetta 3.14 Ubuntu binary archive from your official website (filename: rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2, ~20 GB). Despite multiple attempts (4 separate downloads), I have been unable to successfully extract the archive under Ubuntu (WSL 2 environment).
Here’s a summary of what I’ve tried:
Verified that the .tar.bz2 file is ~20 GB in size and passes bzip2 -tv without errors
Attempted extraction using:
bash Copy Edit tar -xjvf rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2 Also tried:
bash Copy Edit bzip2 -dk rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2 tar -xvf rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar In all cases, no files are extracted, or only an old directory appears:
arduino Copy Edit rosetta.binary.ubuntu.release-371/ with no sign of the expected rosetta_bin_linux_2021.X.Y_bundle/ structure or rosetta_scripts.default.linuxgccrelease.
This issue occurs consistently even after redownloading from your portal while logged in under a valid academic license.
Could you please confirm:
Whether the archive available for “Rosetta 3.14 Ubuntu binaries (20G)” is correct and up-to-date?
If there is a verified MD5 or SHA256 checksum for that archive?
If you could provide an alternate download link or mirror (Globus, SFTP, etc.)?
I would greatly appreciate your assistance, as this installation is critical for running induced-fit docking workflows using RosettaScripts.
I just downloaded and checked rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2, and had no issues extracting it with tar -xvf rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2.
For my downloaded file:
$md5sum rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2
f7b172ecade5ead6478cab518f245bf3 rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2
$sha256sum rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2
a5e09d71c22613c72048ac0a60bafeee58c4a5944fb60435ed21727b3afe79a0 rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2
(There is also an "MD5 checksum of all files" link on the download page, which confirms the f7b172ecade5ead6478cab518f245bf3.)
Additionally, ls -l rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2 reports a size of 21118871660
I do not believe we have an alternative download locations for that file.
That said, the server should support restart behavior. If your browser download is being flaky, you may want to try an alternative downloader -- wget is probably the simplest, and adding -c to the wget commandline (e.g. wget -c https://downloads.rosettacommons.org/downloads/academic/3.14/rosetta_bin_ubuntu_3.14_bundle.tar.bz2) should cause it to resume downloading if there was an error contacting the server in the middle of the download.
Failing that, double check with your campus IT security people to see if there's some firewall or safety check which might be causing issues downloading large binary files.
On the off chance that you are using WezTerm or some other non-standard terminal emulator, try downloading and extracting with something more "normal" with your WSL2 instance. I was able to download the compressed archive just fine with WezTerm/wget but when trying to decompress I was getting Unexpected EOF errors. Once I downloaded and decompressed with Tabby/wget (which is admittedly also "non-standard" compared to PowerShell or something) it worked fine.
Good luck!
Thanks.follow your suggestion taby wget from wget i downloaded ubuntu 3.14 20 gb now decompressing will see how it goes
