Change select mode with button (user action)

Hi. Is there any way to change the select mode e.g from 3 to 2 by clicking a button or passing a value. I guess I can hit APEX_APPLICATION_PAGE_REGIONS and tweak attribute_01 (the json config) but I don't think that's a good idea. ... and thank you for this great plugin which is saving my life :)

BTW, also tried $("#tree").fancytree("option", "selectMode", 3); with a dynamic action but it didn't like it at all
