Onion site won't load if TOR settings set to "Safer" or "Safest" must be "Standard"
Using TOR Browser 14.5.8 tried to load the main onion URL (RoboSatsy56bwqn...) and it just kept spinning with no progress.
"Looking for robot parts..." "Hiding in 2^256 bits of entropy..."
I tried different networks, VPN's, Firewall settings. Nothing fixed it.
Eventually found the cause to be TOR Security Level settings. I had it set to the middle "Safer" level. Changing it to "Standard" would then load the site.
I'm not sure if you can detect if the loading has taken too long or if certain things are being blocked by the user settings and provide guidance in that case. Or perhaps a quick fix is just add into that loading screen a help link "Site taking too long to load?" that takes them to a FAQ on how to change their TOR browser settings. If the site loads normally, they probably wouldn't have time to see/click the link.
On "Safest" level (JS completely deactivate) this warning shows up. Yeah would be nice if this also shows up in "Safer" if possible.
@sixside I hope this helps. I know its a bit of a hack but the failure I saw when running in safer mode was wsm failing to load. Safest mode was already defaulting to error message but the spinner never went away. The pr only displays the main div when js is enabled and wsm is found (both being true only happens when in standard mode on tor from what I understand). One thing to take into consideration is the dependency on wsm. I am new to this project but if there is a future where wsm is not a requirement then it could end up being undefined and standard mode would display the error message by default. This would likely be caught in that case. I am happy to address any concerns and I look forward to digging through the project to see where else I could be helpful. Let me know what you guys think and if you would need an extra pair of hands/eyes anywhere
@KoalaSat @f321x apologies for the ping, I don't know what your pr review process is like or how you prefer to tackle propesed changes/bugfixes/etc. So if this is a bother, my apologies. I just know things get lost in my inbox sometimes and a ping could be helpful. That is all I intended but if its an annoyance just say the word. All the best!
