Proposal of naming change

Open michalk-k opened this issue 3 months ago • 3 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. Currently names of controls do not perfectly reflect the functionality

Describe the solution you'd like

  • Lights - it's Display Backlight. IMO, Lights term is wrong/misleading
  • Air - I would call it Fresh Air
  • Health - it's Air Ionizer (or Cold Plasma Generator). I have to admit, I don't know if there might be other AC features under this name

BTW, great work on aggregating controls under devices!

With regards

Fair enough. I think we've adapted the original Gree naming so far.

We might want to decide to upgrade the UX by making the naming a bit more logical.

@RobHofmann In my opinion, we should stick with the naming conventions used in the official Gree app and the owner's manual. It keeps things consistent and makes it easier for users to understand and troubleshoot features. The README already provides a clear overview, so there's a solid reference point in place.
Also, just a reminder that users can change the display name of each entity in Home Assistant to suit their own setup, so flexibility is still there.

The original naming comes from Chinese product. It's not the first time when these translations are off.

I don't think that there is a reason or a rule forcing to leave original naming at any cost.

We can argue if Health cannot substitute the exact functionality, but Lights is pure off. Speaking about original naming, the app (Gree and Tosot) uses the "Light" word (singular). which doesn't match the functionality either.

Names should reflect the functionality using terms common in specific language. In most cases it matches original naming anyway. But if imprecise, I would fix it for better user experience.

And yes, I know I can change the name in HA GUI. But this is not the point of my proposal.
