The House of the Dead 2 (PAL)

The game runs okay for the most part. A lot of stuttering is going on in-game, and while there is a moment where the game goes full-speed-- it's either at the main menu, the tutorial demo or for a mere second in-game. The game's graphics appear very glitchy, but mostly on interiors and a small amount of the UI, not characters.

Here are some screenshots: 2022-08-07-025103 2022-08-07-025152 2022-08-07-025121 2022-08-07-025328

Settings used: Neon SIMD, Mipmaps and Simple Shaders were on Auto Frame Skipping was on Maximum Downclock Ratio was on 1.479

What label you suggest?

Would suggest In-game+

For the glitches, you could try disabling Neon SIMD and maybe not using Simple Shaders.

Disabling Simple Shaders seemed to fix the graphical bugs, but not the crosshair/pause graphic

Best settings:

  • Per strip sorting
  • Maximum automatic frame skipping
  • No shadows
  • No fog
  • No simple shaders
  • No mipmaps
  • Native depth interpolation on
  • No DSP
  • No Neon SIMD
  • 1.460 downclock ratio
  • Self modifiying code checks reduced (This is very important, because when they were off the game just crashed on me)

The game runs well with these settings and it's definitely playable, but far from perfect

It stills constantly stutters and has framedrops on some spots.

Of course you can disable audio for a smoother experience but you lose the awesome soundtrack and voice acting, and the difference isn't that great

A more reasonable compromise which also benefits the game is to reduce the internal resolution to 320x240 (half)

Also, for even better performance:

  • No V-sync
  • Set downclock ratio to 5.000 (This will make the game go fullspeed most of the time with the ocassional drops and some spots where the game will speed up but these are rare) (WARNING: I just recommend it in this specific game because as is a rail shooter the gameplay won't be really affected as the pace is not really defined by the user)
  • Obviously overclock your vita to 500mhz

The game will always crash on me after the fourth mission (After killing strength and before the cutscenes of the fifth to be specifical) (probably out of mem?), just make a savestate before the cutscenes and load it when it happens, beyond that the game is completely playable, I finished like 5 times already.

I think these are the ultimate settings because I believe it won't run better than this, the first stage is one of the slowest so if you can stomach it you can stomach the rest of the game, obviously helps if you're a fan of the series.

Did I mention the game was playable?

I'm getting a game reset after it tries to load from the memory card. Any help?

Self modifiying code checks to Reduced.

It was like that (otherwise it would crash). In any case, it is working now, thanks!
