Questions about backups

A friend of mine died from some weird glitch. I followed the steps in https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/comments/t2lene/psa_you_can_revive_a_dead_character_by_editing/ but for some reason he still ended up dead.

I assume that the backups kicked in so what I did next was stop server, modify players.db, save the modified db and started. So we got him back alive. Played for a couple of days but today when he went online he's dead again.

What do I need to clean up to prevent my changes to players.db to apply? I dont know if the players.db-journal should be deleted but I tried deleting the backups, deleting the journal, then modifying the players.db.. still not working.

Are the backups created part of the dockerfile steps? Or is it something done by the server (PZ) itself?
