License clarifications

The readme for this project states

Remix Icon is licensed under the Apache License Version 2.0. Feel free to use these icons in your products and distribute them. We would be very grateful if you mention "Remix Icon" in your product info, but it's not required. The only thing we ask is that these icons are not for sale.

The Apache license allows reselling the work, with or without modifications. Is this sentence in the readme a licensing obligation, or just a non-binding ask that you make ? If you really want to forbid people from reselling the icons, then you cannot publish them under the Apache License.

This question has implications on the re-usability of the icons. If you didn't mean to distribute them under the Apache License, and you actually want them to "not be for sale", then they cannot be used in other open-source projects that have an Apache-Compatible license.

+1 on this one, I'd love to see a clarification here.

Creators should definitely clarify this, as it creates some friction for those interested in using Remix icons in commercial projects.

But honestly, I don't think this would change things a lot.

Since they chose the Apache license, those who have already used the icons in commercial contexts might argue that adopting a new license necessarily implies that it would not retroactively apply to them, provided they have followed the Apache license terms.

The irrevocability of the license is explicitly stated in the original text of the Apache license.

Perhaps it will not change things a lot for people already using the icons, but a clarification will be a plus for those who are not using them already and wonder how safe they are in reusing them for various purposes.

@pagelab : They have made two contradictory statements. I think an interpretation that is more charitable towards the creators is that they did not understand the terms of the Apache License, and since they made it clear that they don't want their work to be for sale, the Apache license does not apply. I am not a lawyer and that would be for a judge to decide anyway, but I don't think saying that the license changed would be a valid argument. Re-selling the icons was explicitly forbidden all along.

@lovasoa That might be the case, but the fact is that until this is clarified by the creators themselves, it's just another interpretation. For projects with any commercial intent, this is a real issue that clearly makes RemixIcons less desirable to use.
