Control doesn't match the curve

Open Karmalakas opened this issue 3 months ago â€ĸ 22 comments

So I never managed to make it work properly. I have a GPU temperature curve and a control linked to it, but most of the time it does its own thing. Very rarely control matches the curve Image

Force Apply doesn't help

Relevant hardware specs and setup Windows 11 Pro nVidia RTX 4080Ti

All latest updates installed (although I had this behavior for around a year maybe or more, since I started using FanControl)

Also, at that time of the screenshot how high was the GPU temp?

Also see the Nvidia section here: https://getfancontrol.com/docs/

I believe it's in the screenshot at 39⁰ 🤔

Also see the Nvidia section here: https://getfancontrol.com/docs/

I'll check that as soon as I get home 👀

So these are my Sensor settings: Image

I'm reading the nVidia section in the docs, but I don't really understand if there's anything that can be done 😕

Do you run afterburner or an other software that might control your GPU fans?

Do you run afterburner or an other software that might control your GPU fans?

~~I don't think so 🤔 I never installed any software myself and uninstalled MB software too~~

I just checked the nVidia app and I see it has this đŸ¤Ļ‍♂ī¸ Image

I guess I'll just disable or even uninstall it and occasionally check for drivers manually 😕

BTW, it's 4070Ti đŸ¤Ļ‍♂ī¸, but I guess it doesn't matter

Karmalakas avatar Oct 03 '25 15:10 Karmalakas

OK, so it went to 1300 RPM again and closing the app didn't do anything 🤔

Karmalakas avatar Oct 03 '25 15:10 Karmalakas

Try and run this as "manual" with a fixed speed.

Rem0o avatar Oct 03 '25 15:10 Rem0o

I've set it to 30% (minimum allowed), but still the same behavior ☚ī¸

Karmalakas avatar Oct 03 '25 15:10 Karmalakas

Well at this point I don't know.

  • If the Nvidia app says fixed speed
  • fancontrol says a fixed speed

and your card goes another speed, something else I'm not aware of is setting that speed.

Rem0o avatar Oct 03 '25 16:10 Rem0o

fancontrol says a fixed speed

What do you mean by fixed speed? Fan control should set the speed based on temperature, except it doesn't match what I have set. I didn't set the fixed speed. Or am I misunderstanding?

Karmalakas avatar Oct 03 '25 16:10 Karmalakas

it doesn't match what I have set

Yes, because "something else" is setting the fan speed other than FanControl. That's why there is a "?" next to the % in the software.

Rem0o avatar Oct 03 '25 17:10 Rem0o

I've checked software (MSI - nothing installed, nVidia - app installed with fixed fan speed now, Intel - couldn't find any settings for fan speeds). I thought maybe there's something in BIOS, but all I could find are CPU fan/pump and system fans.

Any other advice maybe on how I could find what may be setting the speeds? 😕

Karmalakas avatar Oct 05 '25 08:10 Karmalakas

But like what's the behavior. If you set your control in manual mode in FanControl and move the slider around, does it reacts? Does it stick? If it doesn't, after how much time?

Rem0o avatar Oct 06 '25 02:10 Rem0o

If I set it manually to 46%, as expected, it stops (it's set to stop at 46%). If I set to 47%, it stays at 47% (~777 RPM). I left it for ~15 mins like this and it didn't change. Then I set it to 60% and again for 15 mins it kept at ~1371 RPM consistently

As soon as I turn off manual control and leave it to the curve, a couple of minutes later question mark appears again and most of the time it's at 58%, sometimes dropping to 0% as it should be at ~40°C

Karmalakas avatar Oct 06 '25 11:10 Karmalakas

Well one thing to keep in mind is your graph have values between 0 and 30. It should be a sharp staircase from 0 to 30, as values below 30 are not accepted. In your case if it only starts at 46, it should be a staircase to 46 and not have that gradual ramp.

Rem0o avatar Oct 06 '25 13:10 Rem0o

I have start at 51% and stop at 46% (that's what was detected automatically IIRC). My current graph looks like this: Image

Are you saying I should have sharp values at 46% and 51%? And above 51% I could have gradual? Why wouldn't control read this value? 🤔 Image

Or am I completely misunderstanding how it supposed to work? 😕 I'm very confused

Karmalakas avatar Oct 06 '25 13:10 Karmalakas

Sharp values yes. However that 58% I have honestly no idea where it might come from. I can say 100% it doesn't come from FanControl.

Rem0o avatar Oct 06 '25 18:10 Rem0o

It seems I can't set sharp values. Trying to add two points - 51°/0% and 51°/31% - won't allow to have same temperature values Could you please give me an example of what my graph should look like based on my screenshots and other info? 😕

Karmalakas avatar Oct 06 '25 23:10 Karmalakas

Just space the two points by a degree.

Rem0o avatar Oct 07 '25 04:10 Rem0o

So here's my graph and the issue is still there. I ran a benchmark on https://mprep.info/gpu/ and it seemed it's working as expected. When benchmark finished and temp dropped so that according to graph fan would keep at 46%, it seemed fine, but then temp dropped more and it should have gone to 0%, but question mark appeared and it jumped to 58% 🙁 A few minutes passed and only then it dropped to 0%

Instead of 0% for the first part of the graph I tried setting 1% and 45%, but it seems, as soon as it drops bellow the Stop % set in the control, something sets it back to 58% 😕

Then your GPU probably has a built-in mechanism to prevent it from going 0 RPM if "X conditions" aren't met. Might be a combination of power and temperature. I've seen some GPUs not go 0 rpm for eg when 2 monitors are connected because it increased the idle power. Not much FanControl can do at that point you'll have to live with it.

Found this topic on nVidia forums and added my case there
