after update from 231 to 234 tray icon does no longer show up

If you are experiencing a crash Link the relevant/associated Windows EventViewer logs, and also FanControl's own log.txt.

Describe the bug I installed 231 via NET installer. Got a message today to update to 234. Update worked perfectly and fast. But after the update the tray icon no longer showed up. Service was running tho.

Is there a log.txt file next to FanControl.exe with recent date entries? 29.08.2025 16:01:01: IPC Error: 29.08.2025 16:01:01: CheckForOtherInstance - Grpc.Core.RpcException: Status(StatusCode="Unavailable", Detail="failed to connect to all addresses") at GrpcDotNetNamedPipes.Internal.MessageReader1.MoveNext(CancellationToken cancellationToken) at GrpcDotNetNamedPipes.Internal.MessageReader1.<>c__DisplayClass9_0.<<ReadNextMessage>b__0>d.MoveNext() --- End of stack trace from previous location --- at FanControl.Bootstrap.CheckForOtherInstance(CommandLineArguments arguments)

Same here, the process is there, but no GUI, did a clean install and it works, tried copying the config from the portable version to the normal one, same issue after the clean install.

Could be something in the config that is not translated properly to the new version causing this to hang.

Can confirm downgrading alone did not work, only when restored back up config from an earlier version did the app return to function.

Oh interesting, for me downgrade alone already fixed it.

Yes. I have that deactivated and all icons are shown because I dislike that popup window for some reason.

I was going crazy thinking i did somethign wrong. But turns out i have the same issue. Downgrading to 231 fixes it.

Persists into 237 after update from 231.

Fancontrol do not control where the tray icon lands in your tray. No program in windows can. Windows doesn't provide any mechanism to do so.

Honestly I couldn't care less about where it shows up, if it would show up at all. That's what the whole issue is. Since something past v231 the icon no longer shows up ANYWHERE after an update.

PaxJaromeMalues avatar Sep 17 '25 15:09 PaxJaromeMalues

Yes, that is not the issue at all, the issue is that fan control gets stuck loading, and does not show in the taskbar or open a window.

Workaround: Full reboot solves the problem.

Can confirm updating to the latest ones solved this for me. We can mark this as solved unless someone else still faces this.
