DO NOT UPDATE TO V229

Open mburke364 opened this issue 4 months ago • 54 comments

As is being reported here and on the FanControl subreddit, V229 is completely broken for most people. I installed the update and FanControl started throwing failure to initialize errors at me and even once I got it to run, none of the fans could be controlled no matter what settings were applied to them. I reinstalled V228 and everything is back to working just fine.

Can confirm. Rolling back to V228 fixed the sensor issue I was having with V229.

No fans for me on z890 aorus master with v229, only nvidia gpu fans found; reverting to v228 helps.

Depuis le passage à la version 229, un ventilateur n'était plus pris en charge, me disait qu'il n'y avait pas de sonde pwm et un autre qui se mettait constemment en erreur. Je suis revenu sur la version 228 et je n'ai plus de problème.

Since upgrading to version 229, one fan was no longer supported, telling me there was no PWM sensor, and another was constantly going into error. I went back to version 228 and I no longer have the problem.

Motherboard model? Logs (logs.txt) ?

V229 is completely broken for most people It is probably specific to a controller chip and/or motherboard model from a LHM update.

If you look at the recent list of commits here https://github.com/LibreHardwareMonitor/LibreHardwareMonitor/commits/master/ can you see your motherboard?

You need to rerun the assisted setup, at least, that’s how it works on my setup

I have the same issue as the others here. I had initialisation errors since updating from v228 to v229. I didn't bother checking if all my fans could be controlled afterwards, since I've had sporadic initialisation errors with v228 during startup but it usually would go away after restarting my system. v228 worked well for me. So with v228 I never saved any changes when prompted after getting these errors: I just discarded and exited and restarted and it would go back to normal again.

With v229 I couldn't get rid of these errors no matter how hard I tried, and my past experiences with FanControl updates led me to think something's amiss with the update, so I didn't thoroughly check if controlling the fans still worked. I did do a quick check with manual control on three fans and they seemed to work, but because of the persistent initialisation errors I decided to just roll back to v228 (I'm on portable version) and it all went back to normal.

Addidtional info.: I'm running iCue (against my wish really) and the latest version of iCue has been known to not play nice with HWiNFO64 (it causes an aberrant delay when starting the app when iCue is running in the background). So I did try updating to v229 without iCue running in the background but the results were the same.

I also noticed this immediately after update. A revert to 228 solved the issue.

EDIT: Completely forgot to mention make and model; GIGABYTE X870 Gaming X WIFI7

Difference between 229 and 228 for me: Case fans are not detected (Uses fan controller) - Works in 228 CPU fans uncontrollable, even when calibrating it reads max RPM for all stages, even though fan is not spinning at more than maybe 20%

If you look at the recent list of commits here https://github.com/LibreHardwareMonitor/LibreHardwareMonitor/commits/master/ can you see your motherboard?

Gigabyte Z890 Aorus Master, log.txt contains only "8/4/2025 12:54:38 PM: Sensor validation failed.", however the startup message is a bit more informative: Missing control sensor: /lpc/it8696e/control/5 - Fan #6. Motherboard isn't listed in recent LHM commits.

PS: with clean v229, i.e. removing userConfig.json, running Assisted Setup does not find any motherboard sensors and no log files are created.

我因为去除了一个机箱风扇导致报错初始化失败,更新到v229以后所有东西都没有了,但是退出并选择放弃保存更改再重启软件即可

Same motherboard, error and log as mine.

Getting an initialization error after the update. Asus PRIME Z790-P Error is displayed at every boot.

I can still control my fans using 229, including manual control. Just tested and still works. Using an AsRock B450 Steel Legend.

Actually there's the following commit, which modifies related code (I have no idea how to build LHM though so can't test a revert):

hi, I'm new to this app, just downloaded v.229, it seems to work the same as v.228 for me? I've noticed no difference. I do have a problem though: the corsairlink plugin wont initialise my icue link hub; I made a post on that on its respective repository. Do note that the problem occurs on both v229 and v228 for me.

Can confirm, broken mess on ASUS ROG STRIX B660-I GAMING WIFI with 229. Reverting to 228 works.

My AIO Pump_Fan was not working. Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7. Back to 228 and it was working again.

In my case FanControl v229 doesn't start at all. I tried reinstalling it and it simply doesn't start. Still, rolling back to v228 works.

giordiemk avatar Aug 04 '25 10:08 giordiemk

in v228 can detect dimm temp. after update to v229 sensor is missing, so rollback to v228

Think I found the issue. This simply removes the control registers to change fan speeds. 🤦

IT8696E_Fix.zip Give this a roll onto a V229 install. I just removed the case line with the empty registers.

v229 can't read the temperature of my G.Skill Aegis 5 memories. Also at the Setting - Edit sources... menu, I am using Korean version, but that specific popup is written in Japanese.

Does not seem to help, replaced the files with the one in the archive (net 8.0), but FanControl still reports that it8696e error.
