FanControl crashes silently when AMD software is updated

Open E14 opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Describe the bug FanControl crashes silently when AMD software is updated.

It also does not restart itself

Is there a log.txt file next to FanControl.exe with recent date entries? Log does NOT contain any entries for that time, but EventViewer does image

event-viewer.log

Relevant hardware specs and setup

  • Ryzen 5700X on MSI B550M mag mortar
  • Sapphire 7800XT GPU

The two "Error" entries you see are from FanControl (see event-viewer.log for details)

The MsiInstaller and restart-manager entries in the screenshot are due to AMD update; Installer restore point is created at 19:33:06, so that is probably when I triggered the AMD update, it goes on until 19:34:07.

This still seems to happen. This is actually a potentially dangerous issue because the fans are not reset after FanControl crashes, instead they stay at the last configured speed.

So unless I reboot (or hibernate) fans may run at minimal speed as installing the driver is unlikely to cause major load on CPU/GPU, potentially overheating the system.
