Process in temp folder THEN place in destination

Open jglazer63 opened this issue 7 months ago • 4 comments

Feature details

When processing in the destination folder for a replacement encoding (delete source file), my library scanner has a fit because for a while there are two videos (part.mkv, etc...). Can you add some way to point to a folder to actually do the processing then move the file to the final destination and at the same time delete the source (if need be)?

More processing, data transferring (if differents volumes) with absolutely no gain in speed or functionality. Only more complicated. BTW, what should be your 'library scanner', and which 'two videos' are real problem? IMHO, that is not 'enhancment' but 'degradation'.

Agreeing with jglazer63 here.

The incomplete file should never show up in the destination folder. That's just weird. It causes library programs like Plex and others to see two copies of the movie temporarily (AND to create other folders and files since it is seen as a movie itself), and one of them isn't even a playable movie. The intermediate file should be worked on in a different (temp) place until finished and then moved into the destination folder. This is NOT a degradation, but a common sense fix for a problem.

Another, less graceful, solution would be to change the extension of the temporary file to something that won't be seen as a movie file, and then rename it when it is completed. The temp folder makes a lot more sense though.

I added an option in 12.3 Beta to have partial files named with .ext.part, which would help with Plex accidentally picking things up. This is in Global Options -> Advanced.

There are some people who like having it named .part.ext so they can preview it while it's encoding.
