Feature request: image thumbnail on article list instead of feed icon

Open gferreroferri opened this issue 4 years ago • 36 comments

It would be great if the image list could show an image preview from article instead of the feed icon

+1 🙏

after feedly has been added this is also the main blocker for me.

If this were implemented, I think it would be nice to allow 3 different options for the image. A small size that would share space with the timeline cell text. A medium size that would look like a banner and be below the article text and a large size that did the same.

That would mean adding one more slider to the timeline customization screen.

+1 for thumbnail previews in the timeline with a slider in settings to customize the size.

As mentioned in #2125 the ask is to implement the views available in Feedly, Newsify etc and more specifically the "magazine view"

I think it’d be awesome. But I’d prefer if the Feed icon stay there, maybe smaller and move the thumbnail on the right. The size could be choose from settings with a simple segmented control instead a slider.

Ditto on an option to get rid of the article icon. I'm just trying NNW 6, and the lack of any options for the article pane is a deal-killer. (There's a reference above to "timeline customization screen," but I don't find any mention of that in the Help or FAQ).) The feed name is there, so the icon is redundant, and smaller font size options like with the reader pane would also be a huge win. The combination of getting rid of the icon and a smaller font size would come close to doubling the number of articles visible in the pane.

Everyone moved on to something else or we all waiting for this still? :/

Hukuma1 avatar Sep 16 '21 05:09 Hukuma1

Everyone waiting for this feature please read. https://inessential.com/2019/10/28/no_etas

vincode-io avatar Oct 13 '21 13:10 vincode-io

Is there a feature set or any list of what's being worked on so users can see if this feature is on a to-do list to being implemented? Pretty sure that would help with any ETA issues as well.

Hukuma1 avatar Oct 13 '21 15:10 Hukuma1

Issues are assigned Milestones and we work on those for each release.

vincode-io avatar Oct 13 '21 15:10 vincode-io

Sorry, I'm a bit new to Github still. Are those milestones public to see? e.g. users can definitely understand that if the issue isn't on there, the ETA is never. :P

Here is an example of another FOSS project that shows progress in list view: https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/projects/32

@vincode-io - would love to see this as well!

Let me know if I can help out with anything - really appreciate the awesome work you are doing on this project!!!

@PAHXO can you help on this please ?

+1 for adding image previews in the timeline, still keep the favicon per feed source.

djmtype avatar Nov 29 '21 15:11 djmtype

Not even in any of the milestones unless I missed it in my quick glance.

Hukuma1 avatar Nov 29 '21 16:11 Hukuma1

+1 for this feature request, only to have the article images being used in the iOS 15 Notifications Summary, instead of the same boring (stretched out) feed icon for each article :) Makes the summary a little more interesting / visually attractive.

+1

I also can't see this in any of the three milestones.

Other apps that support thumbnail on article list:

  • Newsify
  • News Explorer

Note: image comes from main article, not an enclosure.

I arrived here from #2380 (support image enclosures)

Here are some screenshots to illustrate my situation.

NetNewsWire

  • I have to click into every article to see the image of it.

Newsify

  • by seeing the thumbnail I can decide whether I need to click in the article, saving minutes every day.

It's unfortunate to see such a quality-of-life improvement feature not be added to milestones. And after reading https://nnw.ranchero.com/2021/12/28/on-not-being.html I now understand that a) this company doesn't care about this feature, and b) made me find Unread which has the feature, on top of a beautiful UI/font experience to boot.

If anyone is still waiting for this basic feature to be implemented, check out the alternatives that are listed by NetNewsWire team themselves in their blog post.

Hukuma1 avatar Feb 09 '22 20:02 Hukuma1

This isn’t a company. :) It’s a set of volunteers doing this work in their spare time, out of love.

And we do care about this feature — it’s just that other features, such as article themes, have higher priority.

brentsimmons avatar Feb 09 '22 20:02 brentsimmons

I get it. I'm merely informing anyone who was stuck here with their +1/me too comment of wanting this feature to be implemented for over 2 years now. Just linked what was written by someone from your camp.

Hukuma1 avatar Feb 09 '22 21:02 Hukuma1

I ended up at Reeder, this was the feature that I thought it was worth paying for 😄

gingerbeardman avatar Feb 09 '22 21:02 gingerbeardman

Here is how Reeder 5 looks:

Click to expand image preview (None and Small)
None Small
Click to expand image preview (Medium and Large)
Medium Large

noahmaranesi avatar Feb 17 '22 16:02 noahmaranesi

Can we please get this implemented in 6.2?

melwan avatar Apr 25 '22 14:04 melwan

Has this been abandoned?

ghobs91 avatar Jul 04 '22 12:07 ghobs91

@ghobs91 not abandoned, merely "open"

gingerbeardman avatar Jul 04 '22 13:07 gingerbeardman

what about using the iOS link preview feature?

gferreroferri avatar Sep 15 '22 14:09 gferreroferri

This is definitely one of the only features that I think NetNewsWire lacks versus other apps. I've been happy with everything else, but this is what keeps Feedly installed unfortunately.
