RPCS3 crashes when applying update before game library loads up

Open Bobble80 opened this issue 9 months ago • 12 comments

Quick summary

For the past while RPCS3 is crashing if you choose to apply the latest update before the game library loads on first boot of the app.

Details

I’ve noticed that RPCS3 will crash every time when you open the app and are notified of a new update and install it before your game library loads.

So when I open the app and notified that there’s a new update, I have to choose to not update, wait for a second until my game library loads and then go back and search for updates and install the latest one.

I was wondering if the devs could tweak the RPCS3 settings slightly so that the app doesn’t search for new updates until the users game library has loaded, this would fix the issue.

when does it crash exactly?

It’s easy to trigger the issue, it happens every time for a while now.

As I said in the original message, if you open RPCS3 whenever a new update is available and the usual notification message pops up on screen to let you know said updates are available to download. If you choose yes to update before your game library loads in the background, the app will start to update and then crash halfway through the download process.

What I’ve been doing to remedy this is when the update notification pops up, I choose no, and let my game library load up. Then go to the settings bar up the top right of the app and search for updates and then apply the latest updates.

I was hoping you could just tweak the update notification a little bit to only appear after the users game library loads up each time RPCS3 is opened.

I still need the logfile

I still need the logfile

Here you go, log file as requested.

And while I have you here, I've also included another log file for another issue that's happening in both Amazing Spider-Man games for a while now. As soon as the games load, the vibration on my controller will activate constantly and won't turn off until I close the game. It's not activating at full vibration intensity, more of a hum if you get what I'm saying. The issue isn't happening in any other games apart from these two TASM ones. I've already made a report about this a year ago now here.

@Megamouse You said this has been completed? It just hasn’t been fully implemented or released yet?

As far as I know the crashing when updating as the game library is loading issue is still happening.

@Bobble80 can you try this again? Try to update from 0.0.37-18146 to latest.

@Bobble80 can you try this again? Try to update from 0.0.37-18146 to latest.

Seems to be still happening from what I’m seeing.

I was on the recent update from the last day or two as far as I can tell. And I just opened RPCS3 now to update it. Game library was blank when opened and was in the process of loading when the update notification popped up. I chose “yes” to update and the update download bar got to about halfway and then RPCS3 just quit itself.

I tried to see if it’d happen again, but every time I opened RPCS3 after the first time, the game library seemed to be loaded a bit quicker so couldn’t reproduce. Maybe the game library takes a bit longer to load after a first boot of the computer.

I’ll keep an eye on it over the coming days and see can I reproduce it each time a new RPCS3 update notification appears. But for now, main issue still seems to be there, RPCS3 crashes when applying update before game library loads up

I think upgrade notification thread blocks library thread if it isn't fast enough, because if upgrade notification window appears, rpcs3 will not refresh the game library untill you decline upgrade.

The issue still happens in the current build of RPCS3. The updater is popping up before the game library loads and when you try to update it’ll crash the app.

I’d say the best thing to do to solve this would put the update notification popup on hold until the game library loads, if that’s possible.

Hey @Megamouse whenever you get around to looking at this issue again, I just wanted to let you know about another small thing that you might be able to tweak instead of opening up a new ticket here.

On the current builds of RPCS3, the controller function works fine to be able to navigate through your game library and start up a game by pressing the A button or whatever. What’s happening when RPCS3 loads up, the focus seems to go straight to the search bar on the top right of RPCS3. I have to touch the screen on my ROG Ally to bring the focus back to the game list and then I can navigate and select a game no problem with the controller.

I don’t know if it’s supposed to focus on the search bar when starting up, or it’s a small bug. But just as I was asking about the other issue with RPCS3 crashing if you try and update before the game library loads up and if it would be possible to let the game library load first before the app checks for an update. Would it be possible to make RPCS3 focus on / hi-light the first game in your game library automatically so you can scroll up and down through the game list using a controller as soon as the app starts without having to touch the screen or use a mouse click to bring the focus to the game list.
